A one day visit to the Island offers a chance to see the chimpanzees of the world’s only chimpanzee island sanctuary being take care of after they had been rescued from poachers around the country.

Ngamba Island has a total of 50 chimpanzees living within a gazette area of which you can visit and participate in taking care of them.

Reaching the island requires taking a boat ride on Lake Victoria which is Africa’s largest continental lake. The island is managed by a nongovernmental organization and kept safe for short primate tours in Uganda. If a traveler has limited time or funds to chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, then Ngamba Island is such a good option.

Details of the 1 Day Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Tour

Early morning at your place of residence, your safari guide will pick you up for a drive to the water front pier at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre where you get on a boat ride to Ngamba Island using a motorized canoe. It takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to get to the island using a motorized canoe.

Arriving at the island, you spend time learning about these man’s closest relatives and you can participate in some of the activities in the island for instance feeding the chimps, cleaning the island and much more. You have lunch at the island and later on embark on the boat ride back to Entebbe. Arriving at the water from the pier at the Uganda wildlife Education Centre, you meet your safari guide for a transfer back to your place of residence.

When to go for Ngamba Island Boat Excursion

There are two Sessions to Ngamba Island. The first boat Departs Entebbe at the water Front next to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center pier at 8:45 am while the Afternoon one Departs at 12:45 pm and returns at 5:00 pm.

On both Ngamba Island Boat ride Trip, you are treated to two feeding sessions and an informative talk from one of the caretakers who will take you through where the Chimpanzees are located in the whole of Africa. He or she will explain the challenges, opportunities, and solutions of conservation of Chimpanzees in Africa.
